Asian stocks mixed after progress in US-China trade talks

Markets in Asia traded mixed on Monday as investors continued to focus on the trade negotiations between the United States and China. Last week, both sides noted that they made progress in the latest round of talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping expressing hope that a deal will be finalized soon and will be based on "mutual respect and benefit." Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump stressed that Beijing and Washington managed to "negotiate the two hardest points very successfully" but insisted he doesn't want to predict an agreement will be reached.

The Nikkei 225 closed 0.21% lower. The dollar was down 0.26% against the yen to sell for 111.436 at 8:21 am CET.

The Korean Kospi lost 0.18% at 7:59 am CET. The Shanghai Composite declined 0.24% at 8:18 am CET and the Shenzhen Composite dropped 1.31% at 8:05 am CET.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong's Hang Seng added 0.33% at 8:22 am CET and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 closed 0.58% higher.
