United States President Donald Trump acknowledged the role of Khalifa Haftar in Libya's internal conflict as the White House said on Friday that they have spoken on the phone. The head of the administration in Washington cited "ongoing counterterrorism efforts" and stressed "the need to achieve peace and stability" in the war-torn North African country. The call took place on April 15, the statement adds.

"The president recognized Field Marshal Haftar's significant role in fighting terrorism and securing Libya's oil resources, and the two discussed a shared vision for Libya's transition to a stable, democratic political system," according to the announcement distributed to the media.

The strongman, who participated in the dismantling of the regime of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, is the chief of the Libyan National Army. It is the most powerful military force in the civil war and loyal to the parallel government of the Libyan House of Representatives, based in Tobruk. LNA has started an offensive on the capital Tripoli in an attempt to overthrow the institutions recognized by the United Nations.
