Kremlin: Venezuela paid back part of debt in time

Minister of Finance Anton Siluanov said on Friday that Russia has received a tranche of debt owed by the government of Venezuela. He failed to reveal the details, but the struggling Latin American country was due to transfer more than $100 million in fixed-rate interest from a restructuring deal signed a year and a half ago. The $3.15 billion in sovereign debt was reprogrammed to be returned within ten years, with symbolical payments in the first six years.

After several deadlines were missed, Russia agreed to a delay in 2016. The latest installment was due late last month, but Siluanov stressed the contract allows Venezuela another month to meet its obligations. The next payment is scheduled for September. Separately, Venezuela owed $2.3 billion in oil to Rosneft Pjsc as of the end of December.
