Investors were still looking for direction for equities on Friday toward the end of the session in Asia as focus remained on the trade war between the United States and China. The government of the most populous nation seemed reluctant to continue discussions with Secretary of the Treasury Steve Mnuchin and Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer without a move that would make a real difference amid more import tariffs being rolled out and an effective ban for Huawei.

Japan's Nikkei 225 finished 0.97% higher. The dollar was 0.22% in the red at 8:15 am CET, buying ¥109.6025, and advanced 0.16% to 6.93939 offshore yuan. The Hang Seng lost 1.09% in Hong Kong.

The Shanghai Composite sank 1.94% at 8:01 am CET and the Shenzhen Composite tumbled a stunning 2.58%. South Korea's Kospi rallied 1.51%. The Australian S&P/ASX 200 earlier gained 0.59% for the day.
