Europe closes with gains as trade fears ease

European equities closed with gains on Tuesday as trade worries fizzled after German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that the European Union must resolve ongoing trade issues with the United States as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump told reporters during a briefing with British Prime Minister Theresa May he expects a "phenomenal" trade deal between the two countries. Mexico's Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said his country is likely to convince Washington during this week's talks not to impose tariffs on Mexican goods.

The DAX climbed 1.51% at the end of trading with Covestro and ThyssenKrupp leading the gains. The CAC 40 advanced 0.51% as Renault surged 4.65% as the top performer. In London, the FTSE 100 gained 0.41%; Wood Group jumped over 6% to the top of the chart. The euro was virtually flat against the dollar at 5:45 pm CET, buying 1.1238.
