Bayer to invest €5B in alternative weed killers

Bayer AG will invest around €5 billion into the development of alternative weed killers following a string of lawsuits that alleged that its products caused cancer, it announced in a press release on Friday.

The company said that while glyphosate will continue to feature in its portfolio, it was committed to "offering more choices for growers" and would thus invest in additional methods to combat weeds over the next decade. It also stated that innovation would cut the ecological footprint of its portfolio by reducing its environmental impact by 30% by 2030. It will achieve this by developing new technologies, scaling down crop protection volumes and enabling more precise application, the release added.

Bayer was ordered in mid-May to pay $2 billion to a California couple who said that its weed killer Roundup caused their cancer. It subsequently appealed the decision and said that it was "confident" that it would be overturned.
