Volkswagen to start car software unit

More than five thousand people will work together on Volkswagen AG's goal to lift the share of own software to 60% by 2025 from today's 10%. The announcement published on Tuesday adds the Car.Software project is intended to strengthen in-vehicle digital capabilities and services. The automotive giant based in Wolfsburg, Germany, said it wants to unify the platform "with all the basic functions" across the group in the period.

Efforts are centered on operating system Vw.os and cloud computing. ID.3 is set to be the first model for the implementation of the technology. The company said it would present the electric car in September at the IAA International Motor Show Germany in Frankfurt. The new unit will apparently work on the products' intelligent body and cockpit, automated driving and the mobility segment.

Volkswagen said it targets producing 10 million fully connected vehicles per year.
