Wall Street opens flat to lower ahead of earnings

Equities on United States' stock markets started the Wednesday's trading session slightly lower as the earnings season continues. Meanwhile, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said it was uncertain whether the talks between Washington and Beijing will continue in person, as lawmakers seek to stop American companies from doing business with Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. On the data front, the US Census Bureau and Department of Housing and Urban Development reported housing starts in the country fell by 0.9% in June.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.11% at the opening bell, as Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. fell 2.15%. The Nasdaq 100 increased just 0.04%, as Cintas Corp. jumped 7.99%. At the same time, the S&P 500 was flat as CSX Corp. tumbled 8.76%.

The euro and the pound were flat against the dollar at 9:29 am ET, changing hands for $1.12142 and $1.24126 respectively.
