Wall Street closes with losses amid Iran tensions

Friday, 19. July 2019 22:00

After starting the session higher, stocks in the United States closed in the red on Friday amid growing tensions between Iran and the US and the United Kingdom. The US said its Navy shot down an Iranian drone on Thursday but Tehran insisted all its unmanned aircraft are safe and accounted for and provided footage supporting its claims. Meanwhile, Iran stated it captured a British ship in the Strait of Hormuz for violating international regulations and media reported another UK vessel may have been seized. Elsewhere, investors digested corporate earnings and comments from Federal Reserve officials.

The Dow Jones declined 0.25%. American Express led the losses, sliding 2.82% despite beating estimates for second-quarter profit as market watchers worried about the company's expenses.

The Nasdaq 100 fell 0.88%. The worst performer was MercadoLibre, which dropped 3.39%, while Netflix also suffered significant losses, sliding 3.11% after reporting a lower-than-expected new subscriber count earlier in the week.

The S&P 500 ended 0.62% lower with Alliance Data Systems plunging 4.08%.

The euro lost 0.51% against the dollar to sell for 1.1219 at 4:05 pm ET.
