Stocks in the United States closed mixed on Thursday after a volatile trading day and amid somewhat positive economic data published ahead of the session. The markets were recovering after the worst day for equities in 2019 all the while the US bond yields remained low, this time without flashing signals of recession. Latest data indicated that the builder confidence in the US during this month grew slightly, as did the retail sales in July, while the inventories in the manufacturing and trade sectors remained unchanged in June.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average increased by 100 points or 0.39% higher shortly before the closing bell. Walmart Inc. was the best performer, jumping 6.26%. The S&P 500 gained 0.25% at the end of the session, led by Agilent Technologies Inc.'s 6.36% gains. The Nasdaq 100 finished the session losing 0.07%, pushed down by Cisco Systems Inc.'s 8.63% drop.

The euro traded 0.23% in the red against the US dollar, to go for $1.1113 at 4:03 pm ET.
