Facebook has enlisted the Italian eyewear maker Luxottica to develop its augmented reality glasses, codenamed Orion, CNBC reported on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter. Reportedly, the glasses would have a telephone feature and would show users all information in a small display, while live-streaming from the users' vantage point to their social media followers.

There is no guarantee that the product will ever be completed or shipped, one of the sources said but noted that CEO Mark Zuckerberg has a strong interest in the project and has asked Facebook's hardware chief Andrew Bosworth to make it a priority. The company set a tentative date for the completion of the product between 2023 and 2025.

Facebook's shares added 0.24%, to go for $186.62 at 3:32 pm ET.
