US markets close higher after volatile trading day

Wall Street finished trading on Thursday in the green after regaining losses sustained mainly due to another slew of disappointing economic data. In business news, PayPal Inc. was reportedly close to withdrawing from Facebook's Libra project. The social media giant was also expected to face pressure from lawmakers to create a backdoor for its messaging platform encryption in order to allow law enforcement access to illegal content. Meanwhile, PepsiCo Inc. reported its earnings per share were 15% lower compared to the prior year, albeit higher than expected. Costco Wholesale Corp. was expected to report its fourth-quarter results shortly after the market closes.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.47% at the closing bell, after being down over 300 points during session lows. Pfizer Inc. was the best performer, growing 2.22% The Nasdaq 100 jumped 1.16%, as NVIDIA Corp. climbed 4.78%. The S&P 500 increased 0.80% with Activision Blizzard Inc. improved 3.48%.

The euro gained 0.10% against the dollar to go for $1.09703 at 3:59 pm ET, while the pound rose 0.34% to $1.23415 at the same time.
