Google LLC is teaming up with several tech companies to develop an open-source secure chip design project, called OpenTitan.

On Tuesday, Alphabet Inc.'s subsidiary said the project aims to build trustworthy chip designs for use in data center servers, storage, computer peripherals, which would allow anyone to check if the hardware contains vulnerabilities and backdoors.

It will be managed by independent not-for-profit Cambridge-based company lowRISC, with ETH Zurich, G+D, Google, Nuvoton, and Western Digital supporting the project. OpenTitan will also be able to be adapted to almost any device or software regardless of its platform, Google said.
