Wall Street stock markets closed mostly lower on Monday with the investors' focus still on the United States President Donald Trump's statement from Friday in which he clarified that no green light was given by him to gradually remove tariffs that have been imposed on Chinese goods and that he would reject proposals to cancel all of them.

It was reported earlier in the day that KKR & Co. Inc.'s potential acquisition offer to Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. could end up being the largest private takeover recorded.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average index was flat at the close. Walgreens Boots Alliance was the best performer, soaring 5.08%, while 3M Co. had the biggest fall of 1.76%.

The Nasdaq 100 dipped 0.17%. Wynn Resorts was the worst performer, losing 3.83%.

The S&P 500 dropped 0.20%. Marketer Newell Brands led the losses, decreasing by 4.15%.

The euro and the pound were flat compared to the dollar, going for 1.10321 and 1.28529, respectively, at 16:20 pm ET.
