Dow opens on new highs on China trade deal hopes

Major stock market indexes in the United States opened on record highs on Friday after Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said that he believes Washington and Beijing will reach a trade deal. Before the bell, data showed that US retail sales increased 0.3% in October while posted a jump in revenue. Meanwhile, investors will be watching Capitol Hill as impeachment hearings into Ukraine-related dealings of President Donald Trump continue with the testimony of former US Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch just after the White House released the transcript of Trump's first phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The Dow rose 0.35% at 9:30 am ET. The Nasdaq 100 was up 0.56% in the first minute of trading as Applied Materials jumped 7.08% at 9:39 am ET. The S&P 500 gained 0.39% at 9:30 am ET.

The euro was up 0.19% against the dollar at 1.10420 at 9:38 am ET.
