EU regulators consider tougher approach on big tech

Cecilio Madero Villarejo, acting director-general at the European Commission’s competition division, said on Tuesday that European Union antitrust regulators are considering a tougher approach against tech giants by forcing them to do more to ensure fair chances for every player on the market.

This could especially influence Facebook, Apple, Amazon and Google as these companies are regularly at the center of attention for allegedly hindering their competitors from entering the market.

Speaking at the CRA conference in Brussels, Villarejo said that even though the Commission ordered those companies to halt anti-competitive practices, this might not be enough. He added that "in particular in these markets, fast moving markets, we may design more prescriptive and possibly restorative remedies in order to ensure that conditions for effective competition will be fully restored."
