Facebook says will not weaken app encryption

Facebook Inc. stated on Tuesday that the company will not remove or alter end-to-end encryption in its messaging apps WhatsApp and Messenger, in response to a request from US General William Barr, UK Home Secretary Priti Patel, and Australian Minister for Home Affairs Peter Dutton, among others.

WhatsApp leading executive Will Cathcart and Messenger chief Stan Chudnovsky wrote a joint response saying that users' messages "would be less secure and the real winners would be anyone seeking to take advantage of that weakened security."

The request to discontinue end-to-end encryption was made in October as high-ranking officials from different countries were concerned that the complete encryption in the messaging apps would disable law enforcement from detecting online criminal activities.
