Whatsapp scraps plan to sell ads - report

Facebook's Whatsapp decided to give up on plans to sell ads, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter.

Whatsapp's ads integration team stopped working on the project "in recent months" and all the work they did was allegedly removed from the app's code. However, the company still plans to add ads to the app in the future, but they won't be added to the communication part of Whatsapp. Instead, ads will be added in the Status feature which is comparable to Instagram Stories.

The decision to introduce ads to Whatsapp has been controversial and shortly after it was revealed co-founders of the messaging app decided to leave the business.
