Europe opens with gains on COVID vaccine hopes

Major stock markets in Europe opened higher on Friday on hopes a coronavirus vaccine will be available soon after BioNTech and Pfizer said they reduced the side effects of their vaccine candidate, while and Johnson & Johnson announced the start of the phase three testing of its vaccine. Elsewhere, investors digested upbeat UK retail sales figures and awaited preliminary PMI data from the UK and the EU.

The FTSE 100 was up 0.09% at 9:00 am CET. The best performer was IAG whose stock jumped 2.34% at 9:01 am CET.

The DAX rose 0.47% at 9:00 am CET. Covestro led the gains as its shares climbed 1.82% at 9:02 am CET.

The CAC 40 increased 0.37% at 9:00 am CET with Accor up 1.56% at 9:02 am CET.

The euro added 0.07% against the dollar to sell for 1.18686 at 9:02 am CET and the pound gained 0.20% compared to the greenback to go for 1.32404 at 9:03 am CET.
