Instagram CEO: TikTok ban leads to fragmented internet

Instagram's Chief Executive Adam Mosseri (pictured) said on Friday that the TikTok ban won't be beneficial long-term as it would lead to a "fragmented internet."

"If we move to a place where countries start to silo internet within them, and we can't operate in that way, I think that it's much more problematic than any short-term benefit," Mosseri told CNBC, adding that the only short-term benefits will slow down the competitor. Although Instagram's popularity is rising in India, the executive insisted that different policies applied worldwide will be more harmful due to the TikTok ban.

After President Donald Trump signed an executive order requiring ByteDance to sell TikTok, it led the company to file a lawsuit against the US. After several failed attempts to sell the app, the Chinese company chose to negotiate with the government in order to avoid a complete sale of the video-sharing app.
