Social network giant Facebook announced on Wednesday it has teamed up with Luxottica, the maker of Ray-Ban, in order to create its first pair of smart glasses next year.

During the live stream from Facebook Connect, the company's online event for its virtual and augmented reality products, the company’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that Facebook and Luxottica plan to make the glasses as part of a multiyear partnership but didn’t want to reveal the details.

Facebook's head of hardware Andrew "Boz" Bosworth announced Project Aria, a research device that will be worn by Facebook workers when moving around the company's campus. It will produce video, audio, eye-tracking and location data that Facebook intends to use in order to improve its augmented reality smart glasses.
