Facebook Inc. is getting ready for potential unrest after the 2020 United States presidential election as it plans to apply a tool that is designed to slow the spread of potentially incentive posts on its platforms, The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday citing people familiar with the matter.

The tech giant previously used a tool designed for so-called "at-risk" countries such as Sri Lanka and Myanmar, planning to include it in a wider set of tools created for the US election. However, the company allegedly intends to use it in extraordinary circumstances such as election-related violence.

The California-based firm's strategy would modify the news feed to change what types of content users see, preventing potentially controversial posts from going viral in a short period of time.
