Billionaire Peter Thiel (pictured) joined the Board of Directors of privately-held Canadian biotech company AbCellera, the firm announced on Thursday. Thiel co-founded PayPal Holdings Inc. 21 years ago, which he took public as its CEO ahead of its acquisition by eBay Inc. in 2002 for $1.5 billion. He was a co-founder of Palantir Technologies in 2004, and was notably the first outside investor in Facebook Inc.

"Peter has been a valued AbCellera investor and brings deep experience in scaling global technology companies," Carl Hansen, Ph.D., CEO of AbCellera said in a statement. "AbCellera is executing a long-term plan to make biotech move faster. I am proud to help them as they raise our expectations of what’s possible," Thiel added.

AbCellera is currently co-developing antibody therapies for the treatment and prevention of COVID-19 with Eli Lilly and Company.
