Pilots of Delta Air Lines Inc. approved on Wednesday pay cuts to avoid as much as 1,700 furloughs by 2022 due to the industry being crippled by the coronavirus-related travel restrictions.

The agreement will allow Delta to reduce pilots' guaranteed hours by 5%, while on the other hand, over 1,700 pilots will get partial payment of 30 hours per month and won't be required to fly.

According to CNBC, over 70,000 jobs were slashed this year by major airlines in the United States due to the pandemic, including 30,000 involuntary cuts.
