There were more than 20,000 orders made in the Chinese digital yuan on JD.com in the 24 hours between Friday and Saturday evening, the Global Times reported on Sunday.

The vast interest in the purchases came after JD.com, one of China's biggest online retailers, announced it would start accepting the digital renminbi which is issued by the People's Bank of China.

Earlier, JD.com's fintech company JD Digits said it would be giving out 20 million yuan ($3 million) in digital currency to citizens in a lottery.
