US opens higher amid upbeat data

Major stock market indexes in the United States started Wednesday's trading session above the flatline after the US Department of Labor revealed that the number of initial jobless claims in the country dropped by 89,000, to beat the analysts' expectations.

The traders will pay special attention to the developments on the COVID relief front after US President Donald Trump stressed that the coronavirus stimulus package in its current form is unacceptable, and urged the lawmakers to increase the direct payments to Americans from $600 to $2,000.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 0.42% or 132 points as the session started with Disney gaining 2% a minute into the session. The Nasdaq 100 rose by 0.08% at the open as JD.com, Inc. surged 2.78%. At the same time, the S&P 500 advanced by 0.34% with TechnipFMC up by 4.63% at 9:33 am ET. The euro strengthened 0.31% versus the dollar, selling for 1.21940 at 9:28 am ET.
