Shares on the major stock market indexes in the United States ended the session mixed on Wednesday, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed the trading bout with a new all-time high, as the investors look attentively at the developments on Capitol Hill. The protestors brought to a halt a joint session of Congress during which the lawmakers were supposed to count each state's electoral votes and confirm the results of the presidential election.

US Vice President Mike Pence has previously refused to overturn the Electoral College's vote, a request made by President Donald Trump, claiming that he "doesn't have the authority" to influence the election to such a substantial extent.

The Dow Jones surged 1.44% or 437 points at the closing bell with Caterpillar soaring 5.57%. The S&P 500 jumped 0.57% as the session came to a close as Zions Bancorporation rocketed 11.24%. The Nasdaq 100 plunged 1.40% at the session's end with JD.com tumbling 7.66%. The euro advanced 0.25% versus the dollar, selling for 1.23238 at 3:59 pm ET.
