US shares open lower after jobless claims report

Stock markets in the United States started the session with losses on Thursday after the weekly jobless claims report showed an increase of 13,000, beating expectations. Housing starts decreased by 6% in January compared to December. Meanwhile, reports indicate President Joe Biden's coronavirus stimulus bill worth $1.9 trillion will be adopted by the House next week.

The Dow Jones was down by 0.64% at the open, falling over 200 points. Walmart Inc. led the losses, plummeting 6%. The S&P 500 lost 0.74% at the same time with Albemarle Corp. dropping 9.51%. The Nasdaq 100 dropped 1.05% at 9:31 am ET, as Baidu decreased by 4.59%.

The euro traded 0.27% higher compared to the dollar and sold for 1.20748 at 9:31 am ET.
