US shares open higher as Yellen supports stimulus

Stock indexes in the United States opened higher on Friday after Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen expressed her support for President Joe Biden's coronavirus stimulus package and said she hopes for progress in passing the bill. Meanwhile, Biden will be speaking at the G7 summit later in the day. He is expected to address the pandemic, the economic crisis and climate change, among other issues.

The Dow Jones increased by 0.16% at 9:30 am ET as Caterpillar Inc. added 2.45%. The S&P 500 gained 0.35% at 9:31 am ET, with Applied Materials jumping 7.51%. The Nasdaq 100 rose by 0.44% at the same time, also led by Applied Materials.

The euro traded 0.23% higher compared to the dollar at 9:32 am ET, selling for 1.21177.
