US stocks open higher before Yellen's Senate appearance

Shares in the major United States stock markets started the trading session with gains on Tuesday ahead of the Senate confirmation hearing for President-elect Joe Biden's pick Treasury secretary Janet Yellen. In company news, Lumentum announced it will acquire Coherent for $5.7 billion, while Goldman Sachs, Halliburton and Bank of America released their quarterly earnings reports.

The Dow Jones gained over 250 points at the open, up 0.86%. American Express Co. led the gains with 2.90%. The S&P 500 added 0.84% at 9:31 am ET, with IPG Photonics Corp. jumping 6.91%, while the Nasdaq 100 was up by 0.81% at the same time, as Pinduoduo increased by 5.63%.

The euro traded 0.49% higher compared to the dollar and sold for 1.21359 at 9:33 am ET.
