Europe trades lower amid ECB's decision, Brexit uncertainty

European markets were in the red shortly after the opening bell on Friday as traders digested the announcement from the European Central Bank that it will terminate its asset purchasing program. Over in the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Theresa May failed to secure assurances over the Northern Irish backstop as European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker expressed doubt over any deal getting through the British parliament. On the data front, investors are likely to follow Markit manufacturing PMI figures for Germany and the euro area.

The DAX was down 1.15% at 9:15 am CET, led by losses from Heidelbergcement AG O.N. The CAC 40 dropped 0.83%, with Renault as the worst performer, while the FTSE 100 slid 0.97% at 9:27 am CET, with Tui leading the losses.

The euro was down 0.14% against the greenback, buying 1.13482 at 9:15 am CET.
