Europe closes higher on key EU appointments

European stocks closed with gains on Wednesday after European leaders reached a consensus on nominees for the bloc's top jobs. International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde was nominated to succeed Mario Draghi as European Central Bank president, while German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen could be next European Commission president. The European Council also elected Belgian interim Prime Minister Charles Michel to head the body until 2022.

The DAX closed 0.71% in the green as Vonovia topped the chart, rising 2.76%. Meanwhile, the CAC 40 advanced 0.75% as Vinci and Pernod Ricard pushed the index higher. In London, the FTSE 100 added 0.66% at the end of trading; bookmaker Flutter Entertainment rocketed over 11%.

The euro declined 0.07% against the dollar at 5:30 pm CET, buying 1.1279, while the pound fell 0.20% versus the US currency, to go for 1.2569.
