German prosecutors are planning to fine Daimler AG between €800 million and €1 billion for its part in the Dieselgate emissions scandal, the Spiegel reported on Friday.

The Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) found 280,000 Daimler's Mercedes-Benz C-Class and E-Class vehicles were outfitted with the software meant to show lower emissions and ordered their recall. Now, the prosecutors in Stuttgart are planning to fine Daimler up to €5,000 per vehicle, the German newspaper said.

The Stuttgart-based automotive company previously filed a leniency application with the European Commission citing full cooperation with the Dieselagate investigators.
