US probes Ford, Honda, BMW, VW over emissions deal

The United States Department of Justice (DoJ) started a preliminary anti-trust probe into the practices of Ford, Honda, BMW and Volkswagen, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.

The companies are being investigated for agreeing to follow tail-pipe emissions standards in an agreement with California. Additionally, the DoJ is said to be concerned that the deal has the characteristics of a cartel since the companies may have effectively agreed not to compete.

The California emissions deal is contradictory to the policies of the administration of President Donald Trump as the government is seeking to reduce regulations in the auto industry. The US government wants to regulate emission on a federal level.
