Carmakers to meet DoJ in antitrust probe

Carmakers Ford Motor Co., Honda Motor Co., BMW AG, and Volkswagen AG are confronting a federal antitrust probe in the United States for their auto emissions deal and will start meeting with the Department of Justice next week, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.

Last month, the Justice Department sent an inquiry letter seeking information about a greenhouse gas emissions agreement that all four automakers reached with the California Air Resources Board.

In the California pact, all four companies agreed to cut their emissions by 3.7% annually from model years 2022 to 2026. However, the Justice Department’s August 28 letter questioned if the companies reached the deal privately among themselves that "may violate federal antitrust laws," and asked them for more information on that matter.
