Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan noted on Friday that Russia might lead a peace initiative east of the Euphrates River in Syria.

Speaking with foreign media in Istanbul, he stressed that an agreement on Idlib they reached with Russia in Sochi is currently in effect. "We should continue working to that end. I think Russia could lead an initiative to establish peace east of the Euphrates River," Erdogan said.

Earlier in the day, he mentioned that Russian President Vladimir Putin is still to be informed on Turkey's next steps in Syria after Ankara struck a ceasefire deal with the United States.
