Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach agreed on Tuesday to postpone the Tokyo Olympics until summer 2021 at the latest due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"I proposed to postpone for about a year and President Thomas Bach responded with 100% agreement," Abe told reporters. The IOC confirmed the postponement in a statement and noted the decision was made to "safeguard the health of the athletes, everybody involved in the Olympic Games and the international community."

The Olympic Games were scheduled to take place in Tokyo from July 24 to August 9 this year.
