Germany's government will not allow the European Commission to take away Deutsche Lufthansa AG's airport slots, Handelsblatt wrote on Monday.

The country's Chancellor Angela Merkel reportedly told senior members of her party the government is in for a "tough fight" to preserve the airline's Frankfurt and Munich take-off and landing slots, the newspaper reported.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Germany's Ministry of Finance said that the negotiations between the government and Lufthansa are in the "end phase," refuting media claims the talks were finished.
