German billionaire Heinz Hermann Thiele, who is a major shareholder in air carrier Lufthansa, said he will support the state-backed bailout of the company, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Thiele, who recently increased his stake in Lufthansa to 15.5% added that the management and the unions should start to negotiate on the necessary restructuring of the airliner swiftly.

Earlier in the week, media reported that Thiele, who was opposing the bailout, proposed indirect participation in the airliner through state-owned German development bank KfW. Germany's Finance Minister Olaf Scholz said on Monday that a consensus on a €9 billion bailout between the government and Lufthansa has been possible.
