German Economy Minister Peter Altmaier promised on Monday the European Union "won't abandon" its steelworkers whose operations have been severely hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

Altmaier noted steelmaking is one of the bloc's core industries, which must be protected, and revealed its help would be focused on the businesses' transition to environmentally-friendly manufacturing.

Germany's major steel producer ThyssenKrupp AG recently revealed its third-quarter net loss came in at €668 million year-on-year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
