Europe opens lower with data, US debate in focus

European stock markets opened with losses on Wednesday as investors digested the first United States presidential debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden, as well as an array of economic data, including UK GDP and German retail sales figures.

The FTSE traded 0.52% in the red at 9:00 am CET. The worst performer was M&G, whose shares dropped 2.93% at 9:01 am CET.

The DAX declined 0.56% at 9:03 am CET with Covestro, down 4.67%, leading the losses.

The CAC 40 slid 0.82% at 9:00 am CET as Societe Generale fell 2.18% at 9:02 am CET.

The euro traded flat against the dollar to sell for 1.17405 at 9:02 am CET, while the pound lost 0.12% compared to the US currency to go for 1.28499 at the same time.
