Major stock markets in Europe started trading on Wednesday unchanged ahead of the planned signing of the trade agreement between the European Union and the United Kingdom. Meanwhile, the coronavirus pandemic continues to weigh on investor sentiment, with concerns regarding the new, supposedly more transmittable virus variant being somewhat offset by Britain's approval of AstraZeneca plc's vaccine.

The FTSE 100 was flat at the opening bell. AstraZeneca rose 1.14%. The DAX slipped 0.06%, with HeidelbergCement AG losing 0.52%. The CAC 40 decreased just 0.08% as ArcelorMittal S.A. fell 0.61%.

The euro was up 0.13% against the greenback at 8:59 am CET, changing hands for $1.22658. The pound advanced 0.25% at the same time to sell for 1.35304 dollars.
