Robert Koch Institute (RKI) President Lothar Heinz Wieler (pictured) expressed on Thursday his hopes the COVID-19 pandemic would be "under control" by the end of the year.

Still, Wieler warned the situation could soon become worse due to the emergence of new variants of the virus, with the country's intensive care units being "more challenged than ever."

Earlier this week, Health Minister Jens Spahn urged the public to respect the measures of prevention and do "everything we can" to curb the spread of new strains of coronavirus.
