Major European stock markets closed deep in the green territory on Tuesday following positive news surrounding Russia's COVID-19 vaccine Sputnik V. While a recent study confirmed the vaccine's efficacy at 91.6%, its developer Gamaleya Institute asserted the immunity against the disease should last for more than two years.

Earlier in the day, GDP data for the Eurozone revealed a less-than-expected quarterly drop of 0.7% in the last quarter of 2020, which came after a sharp economic rebound in the previous quarter.

The DAX surged 1.56% or 213 points at the closing bell, with MTU Aero Engines climbing 4.04%. The FTSE 100 rose 0.78%, as Intercontinental Hotels Group advanced 6.01%. The CAC 40 soared 1.86% or 101 points. Airbus SE was the top performer, as its shares increased 6.59%. The euro lost 0.24% against the dollar to sell for 1.20291, and the pound fell 0.11% to $1.36470.
