Asia trades mixed as holiday season kicks off

Stocks on Asian markets were mixed on Friday ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday season that starts on Saturday. Meanwhile, investors focused on the coronavirus outbreak in Asia as China confirmed that the death toll from virus-related diseases rose to 25 in mainland China, according to state media reports. The infection spread to South Korea, Vietnam, Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore as well.

On the data front, Japan's inflation was up in December, the country's Statistics Bureau said in its monthly report.

Chinese mainland markets, the Shanghai Composite and the Shenzhen Composite, as well as the Kospi in South Korea, were closed due to the holiday season. The Nikkei 225 traded 0.06% lower at 4:44 am CET while the Hang Seng and the S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.19% and 0.15% at the same time, respectively.

The dollar was flat against the yen, going for 109.4625 at 4:48 am CET.
