Equinor ASA announced on Monday Anders Opedal will serve as the company's chief executive officer (CEO) starting November 2.

Opedal, who currently serves as Equinor's executive vice president for technology, projects and drilling, is set to succeed Eldar Saetre (pictured) as the Norwegian oil and natural gas firm's head. Saetre will retire after spending over 40 years in the company, including six years as its CEO.

"Equinor is entering a phase of significant change as the world needs to take more forceful action to combat climate change. The board’s mandate is for Anders to accelerate our development as a broad energy company and to increase value creation for our shareholders through the energy transition," Equinor Board of Directors Chair Erik Reinhardsen said in a statement.
