US markets close mixed as immigration talks stall

Major stock markets in the United States closed on a mixed note on Monday with the attention focused on the negotiations between the Democrat and Republican legislators. Top lawmakers from both parties are supposed to meet later today in an attempt to overcome the impasse on the border wall funding and avoid another government shutdown.

In business news, Tesla Inc's largest institutional investor T. Rowe Price sold half of its stake in the automaker, according to a filing at the Securities and Exchange Commission. Meanwhile, website Reddit announced it managed to raise $300 million in Series D, bringing the company valuation up to $3 billion. SoftBank invested $940 million into the company Nuro. Solium Capital Inc.'s board of directors recommended its shareholders to accept Morgan Stanley's offer of C$19.15 per company share.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.21% with The Walt Disney Company losing 1.87% at the closing bell. The Nasdaq 100 was down 0.06%, weighted down by gaming industry's Activision Blizzard Inc. and Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. losses. while the S&P 500 gained 0.07% at the end of the trading session, bolstered by medical manufacturer Abiomed's 4.02% increase.

The euro and the pound were 0.57% and 0.40% lower at 3:59 pm ET, trading for $1.28612 and $1.12766 respectively. Precious metals were falling at the same time, with platinum depreciating the most and going for $787.08, followed by palladium which exchanged hands for $1,392.02.
