Europe closes mostly lower amid earnings

Equities on major stock markets in Europe finished the Wednesday's trading session mostly lower mixed with the focus remaining on earnings. Italian oil and energy company Eni reported a 4% increase in revenue in the first fiscal quarter of 2019. Wirecard AG reported it has reached an agreement with SoftBank Group Corp. under which Japan's conglomerate will invest about €900 million in the fintech company. Meanwhile, British members of the parliament criticized representatives from Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube for the way social media platforms handle hate speech.

In London, the FTSE 100 was down 0.73% at the closing bell as packaging company Smurfit Kappa Group dropped 4.25%. The CAC 40 fell 0.08% with Renault being the worst performer, sliding 3.67%. At the same time, the DAX rose 0.52% with SAP surging 12.55% on great earnings.

The euro was down 0.31% to $1.11932 at 5:29 pm CET, while the British pound increased 0.08% to $1.29474 concurrently.
