Wall Street closes in the green ahead of earnings reports

United States stocks closed in the green on Friday in spite of continuing tensions between China and the United States and ahead of several earnings reports scheduled for release after the closing bell. US Vice President Mike Pence and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned China's detention of two Canadian citizens and called for their immediate release. Oil prices also extended their losses from earlier in the session, dropping over 4% as fears of an economic slowdown amid concerns of an escalating trade war between the world's two largest economies affected investment incentives.

The Dow Jones ended the session 0.17% in the green, with McDonald's the best performer. The Nasdaq 100 was up 0.40% at the close led by Dollar Tree Inc's gains of 3.14%. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 closed 0.21% up on the back of Keysight Technologies Inc's stock, which skyrocketed 11.57%.

The euro was flat against the US dollar to go for $1.1131 at 4:03 pm ET.
