Hammond: Johnson must prove deal is not trick

Friday, 18. October 2019 18:23

United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson needs to prove that he is not attempting to "dupe" British MPs by making them support a "heavily camouflaged" no-deal Brexit, former Chancellor of the Exchequer, and one of the loudest Tory no-deal opponents, Philip Hammond said in an article written for The Times.

Hammond, who was part of former Prime Minister Theresa May's government, insisted that Johnson needs to prove he still wants to preserve a strong trade relationship after the UK leaves the EU. Last month, Hammond had the whip removed after he failed to agree that a no-deal Brexit should be an option.

MPs will vote on Saturday on Johnson's Brexit deal.
